Here’s an example of the acreage or horse properties in Dripping Springs that you’ll find from time to time.  Yes, you can find horse properties in Austin for sale, but for the most part, they will be in one of the outlying towns or cities such as Dripping Springs, Buda, Bastrop, or Liberty Hill.  This particular home was originally listed for $240,000 and it sold in about 2 1/2 months.  That was pretty quick, which is an indicator that it was priced well, not only for it’s size and location, but also for it’s condition.

I’m writing this post primarily to address acreage properties in general. The further out you go from the center of Austin, the easier it is to find acreage properties, and especially horse properties. As you get even further out, you will find even larger properties for you home in the central Texas/Austin area.  On the east side of the interstate, in general, you will find what once was, or even still is, farmland.  It’s flatter country and more fertile soil.

On the west side, the terrain becomes rockier as you get closer to the hill country.  Large tracts of land in the western portion of the Austin area either once were, or still are, ranch properties. Some of the “closer-in” ranches have been sold to developers, as the central Texas region has grown. Tracts of land that were sold for residential developments, but were designated as ”acreage” properties are typically between 1 to 10 acres. For example, some subdivisions include lots between 1-3 acres, others may only have lots ranging between 3-5 acres and others between 10-12 acres.

There are a wide range of acreage properties in our area, but to have the greatest selection for building your own custom house, you may have to go as far as Dripping Springs to the southwest, Wimberly to the South and Bastrop to the southeast.  Looking north, Liberty Hill has acreage tracts (northwest), or consider looking out toward Taylor to the northeast. It all depends on what you’re looking for–flat, fertile acreage or rocky, tree-covered land.  Or, you can buy a resale home in Austin’s surrounding areas.  Let me know if you want me to help you find just the right horse property, with or without a house already on it.  We might even find one with a horse already on it!  Happy house hunting.
